Androscoggin River Portal is a digital repository designed to link together all concerned community members, organizations and businesses along the Androscoggin River.
The Androscoggin River runs 176 miles from Northern New Hampshire to the coast of Southern Maine 1 and passes through many different communities. Historically, the river has been a life-force for the financial well-being of the towns along its path. The textile, paper and shoe factories provided steady employment, sustainable wages and creating thriving communities along the Androscoggin. However, before the passing of the Clean Water Act in 1974, there were few environmental regulations on the industrial and municipal output. Most of the generated waste was directly discharged into the river, resulting in poor water quality. In recent years, through legislation and grassroots movements, the river has rebounded significantly.
Today there are many groups involved in the health of the river and the sustainability of the communities along it. Industrial use of the Androscoggin River has significantly diminished. Recreational opportunities are growing in scope and number.
